There is y There are

En el idioma inglés, “there is” y “there are” son formas verbales que se utilizan para indicar la existencia o la ausencia de algo. Estas palabras son esenciales para comunicar eficazmente en inglés, y son especialmente útiles cuando se habla sobre lugares, objetos o personas.

Usos de “there is” y “there are”

Hay dos formas de decir “hay” en inglés: “there is” se utiliza para hablar de una sola cosa o persona en singular, mientras que “there are” se utiliza para hablar de dos o más cosas en plural.

There is y there are diferencias, cuando usar y ejemplos con oraciones
  • Hay un libro. – There is a book.
  • Hay unas personas. – There are some people.
  • Había mucha comida. – There was a lot of food.
  • No hay pan. – There is no plan.
  • ¿No había ofertas? – There were no offers?
  • There is a dog in the house. – Hay un perro en la casa.
  • There is so much to learn about the world. – Hay mucho que aprender sobre el mundo.
  • There are some persons waiting. – Hay algunas personas esperando.
  • There are beautiful products. – Hay productos hermosos.

Forma negativa

  • “There is” + “not” o “no” + lo que no hay (en singular).
  • “There are” + “not” o “no” + lo que no hay (en plural).

Ejemplos:

  • There is not a person that can help you. – No hay persona que pueda ayudarle.
  • There are no employees. – No hay empleados.

Forma interrogativa

Como en toda oración interrogativa en inglés, se invierten los lugares y primero el verbo y luego el “there”.

  • “Is” + “there” + lo que hay (en singular).
  • “Are” + “there” + lo que hay (en plural).

Ejemplos:

  • Is there a pencil? – ¿Hay un lápiz?
  • Are there any apples for me to eat? – ¿Hay manzanas para comer?

Pasado de “there is” y “there are”

En el pasado, se utilizan las formas “there was” y “there were”. “There was” se utiliza para hablar de una sola cosa o persona en singular, mientras que “there were” se utiliza para hablar de dos o más cosas en plural.

There was en forma afirmativa (Había)

There + was o were + lo que había

Ejemplos:

  • There was a dog in the house. – Había un perro en la casa.
  • There was a beautiful garden. – Había un hermoso jardín.
  • There were many opportunities to learn. – Había muchas oportunidades para aprender.
  • There were big companies. – Había grandes compañías.

There was en forma negativa (No había)

There + was o were + not/no

Ejemplos:

  • There was not a dog in the house. – No había un perro en la casa.
  • There was not a beautiful garden. – No había un jardín hermoso.
  • There were no flowers. – No había flores.
  • There were no cars. – No había carros.

There was en forma interrogativa (¿Había?)

Was o were + there + lo que había

Ejemplos:

  • Was there a problem? – ¿Había un problema?
  • Was there something wrong? – ¿Había algo malo?
  • Were there big cars? – ¿Había carros grandes?
  • Were there a lot of families? – ¿Había muchas familias?

Ejercicios

Ejercicio 1: Completa las siguientes oraciones con “there is” o “there are”, según corresponda.

  1. _______ a cat on the roof.
  2. _______ some books on the shelf.
  3. _______ no milk in the fridge.
  4. _______ a lot of people at the party.
  5. _______ a problem with the computer.

Ejercicio 2: Transforma las siguientes oraciones a forma negativa.

  1. There is a park near my house.
  2. There are some flowers in the garden.
  3. There is a supermarket on the corner.
  4. There are some children playing in the park.
  5. There is a party at my friend’s house tonight.

Ejercicio 3: Transforma las siguientes oraciones a forma interrogativa.

  1. There is a pen on the desk.
  2. There are some cookies in the jar.
